Originating in 869 CE during a devastating plague, the Gion Matsuri began as a ritual of purification and pacification of angry spirits (goryō), disease-bringing entities unleashed by imbalance. The Chigo, pure young boys chosen from elite merchant families, serve as living vessels for the divine. Dressed in ceremonial robes, carrying swords and ritual symbols, isolated from the profane world (no touching ground, special ablutions, separation from women and contamination), they channel the gods themselves. On the Naginata Hoko float, the lead Chigo cuts the sacred rope with a sword swing, opening the procession that still cleanses Kyoto to this day.
